A travel industry professional and recreational runner shares his Yoback experience.
(Note: the following article is based on direct quotes from our interview)
Before
My Achilles used to get properly sore, especially after fast, intense sessions on the track with my running club. I was spending £70 to £80 a time going to see an osteopath just to keep on top of it. I'd even thought about heading to the builders merchants for a bit of piping to knock something up myself.
"I thought about going to the builders merchants and just buying a bit of piping... but I only had the thought, it didn't actually [happen]."
The Turning Point: Why Yoback?
It was the algorithm that got me, really: I run a lot and engage with other runners online, so the ads started showing up. What tipped me over was the money-back guarantee.
"I was thinking, okay, I've tried everything. I'm spending 70, 80 quid to go to an osteo. Let's try this out, if it doesn't work, you have your money back."
The Change: Life After Yoback
The honest truth is I don't have to use it every day, which I actually think is a good sign: it means it's doing its job of keeping the problem under control rather than needing constant treatment. If I've had a heavy track session that irritates the Achilles, I'll get the calves out on it and stretch it properly, and the issue settles down.
"It's supposed to alleviate the problem... it's kind of a good thing that you're not having to use it every day, but you have it there when you need to use it."
I also use it for the odd bout of lower back tightness, and my wife's picked it up a few times during her Couch to 5K. One thing I really rate is how easily it folds away: no arguments at home about a health gadget taking up space in the corner, which is exactly what happens with most of this stuff. If I'm honest, I probably don't use it to its full potential. I know there's more to it than I'm using.
"It's not just like a butter knife, it's actually a Swiss Army knife."

Q: How did you find us, Facebook or Instagram?
"You know, when you have a thought or something, it's on the Instagram... I run a lot, and I was probably engaging with other runners, so the algorithm started sending me your thing... my Achilles were getting quite sore... I was spending 70, 80 quid to go to an osteo. Let's try this out, you know, if it doesn't work, you have your money back."
Q: How would you describe it to someone?
"I guess it's a versatile piece of kit... it does have a kind of premium feel, but I would say maybe I don't use it to its full potential." (Later, on reflection:) "It's not just like a butter knife, it's actually a Swiss Army knife."
